‘Metropolitan Transitions’ SDG chair

Sustainable Development Goal 11 Sustainable cities and communities

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 ‘Sustainable cities and communities’ aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by improving urbanisation, reducing environmental impacts and providing basic shelter and services for all.

The ‘Metropolitan Transitions’ SDG chair

The ‘Metropolitan Transitions’ chair (METROFORUM) is a meeting place and forum for dialogue that aims to bring together a wide range of stakeholders (academics, urban development professionals, students) to discuss urban and metropolitan issues. In particular, we use the multi-dimensional concept of ‘transitions’ in our thinking and activities. This urban transition must be viewed as a global phenomenon, both historical and regional.

Working together on metropolitan transition issues

The principle of the ‘Metropolitan Transitions’ SDG chair is based on the mutual interest in academic structures and civil society working together on joint projects , capitalising on a tradition of high-quality dialogue. The aim is to fuel a debate that is currently too sparse, to initiate innovative, decompartmentalised projects, to encourage observation and experimentation, and to open a chair in applied transitions, with a forward-looking approach.

The primary purpose of this chair is academic. Its aim is to be a facility for students studying urban issues at Lille’s universities and grandes écoles. The chair also intends to build a system for producing knowledge, expertise and innovation for the Lille metropolitan area, to serve and support local authorities.
